The 3Ts recently slipped on hairnets to help those in need at Father Joe’s Villages.   It was an incredibly rewarding experience.  Father Joe’s Villages began more than 60 years ago as a small organization looking to help San Diego’s homeless population.  Over time Father Joe’s Villages has grown to be the largest provider of homeless services in San Diego.  Father Joe’s Villages mission is to give those that have fallen on hard times the means to turn things around.  They provide many things that most of us take for granted: shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, and education.  Father Joe’s Villages creed is something to be admired:

Compassion: Concern for others and a desire to assist.
Respect: An act of giving particular attention or special regard.
Empathy: Understanding, an awareness of and sensitivity to the feelings of others.
Empowerment: Helping others to help themselves.
Dignity: Counting all people worthy of our esteem.

As we served dinner I was blown away by how long the line was.  Hard times know no age, race, gender, or culture.  We served roasted chicken, Spanish rice, steamed squash, and chocolate cake.  The food looked and smelled absolutely delicious.  I can only imagine how comforting it is to those in need to know where their next meal is coming from.

I had the pleasure of chatting with a young woman who was staying at Father Joe’s Villages.  She had fallen on hard times and was taking the necessary steps to turn her life around.  In addition to going to school, she completes a minimum of two chores daily.  Helping with dinner service counted as one of her chores.  I was impressed with her tenacity.  I’m sure she will continue to better herself little by little, step by step, till she is able to graduate onto a better life.  Thanks to the wonderful programs offered by Father Joe’s Villages, she will be able to make a change that will brighten her future and keep it that way. I had a teacher say to me once, “Most families are three paychecks away from being homeless.”  I consider myself lucky that I have lived the life I have lived.  It’s good to take a step back sometimes though to realize just how lucky you really are.  The 3Ts will be rocking hairnets at Father Joe’s Villages on the following dates during our 2012 volunteer season:

  • July 19th
  • September 20th
  • November 15th

If you have the time, we have a hairnet for you!
