?Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.?

Though Circuit City had been on the ropes for years and long considered a weakening retail player, the chain?s demise creates a huge ripple that will permanently change the way electronics are sold. ?The shuttling of Circuit City leaves Best Buy as the country?s only nation-wide electronics retailer, giving the chain monopolistic rule over its suppliers. With Circuit City gone it will not be long before we hear stories of Best Buy strong arming manufacturers to drive down prices and increase the retailer?s margins. ?It will cost manufacturers more to place a product advertisement in Best Buy?s circular, the price of an aisle end-cap just skyrocketed, and responsibility to balance inventory has fallen squarely on the manufacturers. ?Absolute power corrupts absolutely and Best Buy has just bought Park Place and Boardwalk ? it owns the board.

“For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act ? not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.? ?

President Barack Obama, January 20, 2009
